What do you do to manage stress? If you are like me, you might choose to grab something to eat – something that will taste good and, yes, comfort you.  But actually, how you feel can be directly related to what you put into your mouth!

Instead of that brownie or bag of chips, try grabbing some of the foods below and see if your stress level decreases. When you add in good vitamins and minerals that your body needs, you will definitely feel a difference. It’s another example of making good choices.

Six Better Food Choices to Help You Manage Stress

1. Blueberries are very high in Vitamin C which has proven to help the body deal with high levels of stress. Blueberries’ high amount of fiber help regulate blood sugar levels too.

Sweet potatoes are packed full of beta-carotene (gotta love that orange color!), and the fiber helps you process the carbohydrates in a slow, steady manner. Have you tried baked sweet potato chips? 3. Turkey contains L-tryptophan, an amino acid that triggers the release of serotonin which is a great, feel-good brain chemical.  It is very calming. Now you know why you always want to take a nap after eating a big turkey dinner!

4. Walnuts are very high in potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron, selenium, and copper, and they promote good digestion and a healthy immune system. Crush them and sprinkle on yogurt, salads, or just grab a handful for anti-stress benefits.

5. Brown rice and other whole grains like bulgar wheat, quinoa, or oats contain plenty of B vitamins. They also supply carbohydrates that give you serotonin so that blood sugar levels are not spiked. Healthy fiber is another plus of these whole grain foods.

6. Soy is another great addition to your stress-reduction plan. Soy is high in protein, B vitamins, calcium and magnesium.
