Going Green Tips: How Toxins Can Hurt & What You Can Do About It

Going Green TipsOn the Lookout for Going Green Tips

Everyone is on the lookout for going green tips. I recently read Green Goes with Everything by Sloan Barnett and I am more convinced than ever that using non-toxic, green cleaners is not optional! You might  think that what you don’t know won’t hurt you, but all you have to do is look around at the increase in asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart conditions, ADD, autism, and more to realize that  something terribly wrong.

The Toxic Truth about Household Cleaners

Sloan exposes the toxic truth about household cleaners you use every day, as well as personal care products, baby products, clean food, and clean water. In the book which is chocked full of going green tips, she tells how she subjected herself to having 17 vials of blood drawn to test the levels of toxins in her own blood. She then gives a detailed account of the toxins found in her and what products might have caused them.
Sloan shares with us a way to categorize chemicals we commonly use in our homes by the kind of damage they can do, either alone or in combination with others:
Carcinogens are chemicals that cause cancer.
Teratogens are chemicals that cause birth defects.
Developmental/reproductive toxicants are chemicals that damage the normal development of a fetus, infant, or child or damage reproductive tissues.
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with normal hormone functions, which can lead to premature puberty in girls and feminization of male fetuses.”
Have you ever stopped to think how strange it is that products that are suppose to clean our home have warning labels on them? They are supposed to be getting rid of bad stuff when in actuality, they are making your home dirtier.
And get this: the labels on your cleaning products don’t even have to list all the bad stuff that is inside them. The government only requires companies to list “chemicals of known concern” on their labels. Sloan gives a list of toxic ingredients and tells their respective dangers: things like ammonia which is fatal if swallowed; skin, lung, throat irritant; can cause blindness and formaldehyde which is a known carcinogen. She goes on to list types of household cleaners and what chemicals they might contain.
Go to the Household Products Database at the National Institutes of Health and look up some of your own cleaners. Or look up an ingredient such as butyl cellosolve right at this site. Believe me, you will be shocked!
Throughout the book, Sloan gives lists of Five Going Green Tips and lists of The Plain Green Truth. (It’s easy to find them because they are on green pages!) Here is just one set of her great “Five Going Green Tips:”

Actions You Can Take: Five Going Green Tips from Sloan’s Book:

“1. Gather all your cleaning products and read the labels.
2. Notice how dangerous and toxic they are. Then, take a deep breath (but not near the cleaning products).
3. Take all the ones that say “Danger,” “Poison,” or contain chlorine bleach and ammonia and put them in a garbage bag.
4. Call your local sanitation department and ask them how to dispose of them safely.
5. Buy green cleaning products and breathe deeply and safely.” (pg. 43)
And here is one of her lists of “The Plain Green Truth:”
1. “Fear not, there are cleaning options that are safe and effective.
2. No one expects you to switch to a green cleaner that doesn’t clean.
3. Because true green cleaners are superconcentrated, you can also end up spending less time and putting less plastic in our landfills.” (pg. 45)

  3. With 2 small kids at home, I am all for safe cleaning products. We use Shaklee’s cleaning products in our house (not a distributor, just a user). People always get the impression that natural products don’t clean as well. That just isn’t true. Nothing cleans our glass stove top like their Scour Off paste. I think my wife used it to clean inside the oven once too.
