It is important to know the truth regarding natural versus synthetic vitamins before you put a vitamin in your mouth.
It is possible to ingest a pill that can kill us – so why would we even consider swallowing a vitamin we were not certain was good for us?
A vitamin consists of not only the organic nutrients identified as the vitamin, but also enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants, and trace element activators.
A vitamin supplement cannot simply be an individual chemical or several chemicals. Supplements must be food concentrates, intact, integrated with their vitamin complexes incorporated so as to retain their functional and nutritional integrity.
There are two general points of view when it comes to natural versus synthetic vitamins.
One belief is that the vitamin factors can be made as parts to resemble the structure of natural vitamins, prepared in a chemically-pure form in a high concentration or high potency. The result is a synthetic vitamin that is a crystalline-pure chemical, hardly resembling the original intricate vitamin complex. This is the principle followed by the drug or the pharmaceutical companies and most supplement companies.
Many contemporary biochemical researchers and nutritionists believe that the body doesn’t know the difference between this synthetic vitamin and a natural, whole-food vitamin.
The other point of view, the natural vitamin point of view, is that vitamins are just like other food factors. They exist as extremely complex groups of associated substances of a synergetic nature and that if the complex is taken apart or fractioned, it no longer is capable of producing its normal nutritional and metabolic effect or function.
The important truth is that nature produces that which man cannot duplicate.
Even when the chemical analysis is the same, there is still a difference that makes one alive, functional, and the other dormant, inactive, and basically dead.
The synthetic product may resemble the natural product in one or more ways, but it is deficient and definitely not the same thing. It is a false imitation.
The synthetic product is always simple, isolated, chemical substance while the natural product is a complex mixture of related and similar and interdependent materials.
The Landmark Study conducted at the University of California at Berkeley in 2007 proved that people on retail store vitamins sometimes did worse than people on no vitamins at all in their body’s bio-markers and disease history.

Thanks for posting this article Amy! If people were to better educate themselves about food, many pharmaceutical companies would be out of business. Normally these’s no substitute for what nature engineers. Natural food is potentially the best treatment for many medical conditions, we just have to study them more in order to discover in exactly what proportions certain individuals may require a particular type of nutrient.

Ryan, I so agree with you about people needing to make better choices in what they eat and that needs to be lots more organic vegetables and fruits. Many books written on avoiding cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc. have to do with diet! But unfortunately, even if we are able to eat a good organic food diet we still are challenged to be able to get all the nutrition we need because of poor growing conditions, picking items green, packaging toxins, etc. That is why I still believe a good, whole food, natural supplement is the best way to build up long term optimum health – while including a good diet of course!
